Here we are with the last SoS post before Christmas. The sun is shining, and it feels like summer today, unlike yesterday when we had strong winds in the morning, lovely sunshine in the afternoon, and hailstones in the early evening followed by rain. What with that and the strong winds we have had this week, it has been some week for weather! Anyway, things have calmed down again, and I have a long list of things that need to be done outside, so am very glad to be on holiday now. Thanks once again to The Propagator for allowing us to share what is going on in our gardens.
First up, the first wild strawberry is almost ripe (the other side isn’t). There are going to be quite a few more so am looking forward to sneaking outside and picking them as they ripen.

We popped into the garden centre today, and I have to say I was disappointed yet again in the choice of herbs for sale. I did, however, find a rather shaggy lemon balm to replace the one that didn’t last the winter, a purple sage and also an echinacea plant. I am really not sure where I am going to put this last item, and may pass it on to a friend, and actually only bought it to get the ‘three herb plants for $12’ offer.

Elsewhere, the dill has perked up quite a bit, the curry plants are both doing really well and the pineapple sage is already outgrowing its pot. As for basil…well, I have a supermarket pot plant that is doing fine on the kitchen windowsill at the moment, but I really need to get some good plants going.
On the subject of basil, the cinnamon basil seeds are germinating. Please forgive the scruffy pot! My indoor chilli plants are all doing well, and will need to be put into more permanent pots soon.

At number 5, it is agapanthus time here in Aotearoa. This one is on the steps up to our house, and is just about to come into flower.

Finally, another look at the alstroemerias or Peruvian lilies which have now completely taken over the patch at the side of the house. There is a host of golden…well, alstroemerias…

As usual, I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s beautiful gardens in other parts of the world. A very Merry Christmas to all SoSers out there! May you have a plant filled Yuletide!
You can find Thistles and Kiwis on Facebook, and also on Instagram@thistleandkiwis. As for Twitter….am totally inactive these days. If you want to get in touch, email me on thistlesandkiwis@gmail.com
Tree fern looking fabulous there. Nice to see a bit of sunshine. In short supply here currently.

Yes we have a lot of agapanthus around…some may have to be chopped down as they are blocking the staircase to the house.

Wonderful to see the sunlight never mind the flowers! It’s extraordinary how much the lack of sunshine affects one’s mood. Well mine anyway. Agapanthus grow well down here too and seeing them always takes me back to South Africa. Reading about your herbs has reminded me that my curry plant died last year. I must put it on the list for a new plant in spring. Fortunately we have some rather good online herb nurseries as well as a proper one not too far away which I must find time to visit next year. Have a lovely holiday season 😊 I wish I was in NZ for it!

Oh I agree re sunshine – I remember those long, dark winters in Scotland and Denmark and how depressing it was. Have a wonderful time over the holidays!

Wonderful to see all that sunshine! I tried alstroemerias a few years ago with no success but maybe worth another go. Have a good Christmas. It will be quite different in sunshine and warmth.

They seem to grow easily (almost too easily!) here. Merry Christmas to you as well!
