This is the season of food. Whether you are in the northern hemisphere and enjoying soups, stews and hot chocolate, or in the southern and enjoying strawberries, crisp salads and ice cold beer, there is no doubt about it that Christmas means food. It is a time of year to get together with friends and acquaintances and enjoy a meal together.
We had three guests on Saturday, and it was fun to set the table with summery napkins (note the unironed effect in the picture at the top of the post, of course deliberate….) and welcome platters. I have to admit I am usually lazy with a first course, preferring to pick up some nice bread, salami, olives and paté for people to pick on when they arrive.

Keeping the main course also simple, we ate salmon (fillets, brushed with olive oil and lemon juice and roasted in the oven), new potatoes, asparagus and a large salad, washed down with a chardonnay from Rod McDonald Wines. Desert was a large bowl of blueberries and raspberries, Hokey Pokey ice-cream and salted caramel chocolate from the Wellington Chocolate Factory.
