If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would decide right from the outset that we would not discuss the news, not even Dolly Parton or the King of Norway.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would be sipping Earl Grey Blue Flower and nibbling on an Afghan biscuit from our local deli (as you can see in the featured image at the top of the post).

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I would show you pictures of the beautiful sunrise on Tuesday. You say the colours are stunning, but how was the weather since a red sky in the morning is a shepherd’s warning? You smile and say it was OK.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I would tell you that my Pilates teacher is going to be teaching from her home instead of the studio and that it will be very difficult for me to get there since I don’t drive. You say that is a bit annoying but there must be a solution. I agree.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would talk about August, about Wellington on a Plate and all the excellent food we ate this month. There were burgers, a dinner, a wine tasting and dinner and we also ate well up in Napier. You say it does sound good.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would talk about what we have been reading (mixed), listening to and watching. You ask what we have enjoyed recently and I say we have been watching the Danish series Follow the Money on Neon which is good. Masterchef Australia and the Swedish drama Blood Sacrifice on Netflix. You say those dramas sound good.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I would ask you if you would like to stay for dinner. I’m making toad in the hole. You say oh yes that does sound good…so we settle down to comfort food, a glass of wine, and more conversation.

  1. Unfortunately we are not having a coffee or even a cup of tea but I love the look of your sunrise and that particular Moomin mug. . . also the last two dishes you have enjoyed . . . Was not aware you do not drive . . . do hope you find a way to do your Pilates. For myself, have turned night into day again, following the Vuelta in Spain for three whole weeks – amazing how much of nature and culture one can learn from helicopter and motorcycle cameramen . . . but noting down your reading . . .

  2. I haven’t made toad-in-the-hole for a long time, so your delightful photograph has jolted me into making note of it. I also haven’t enjoyed Earl Grey Blue Flower for a long time. Perhaps I should try to visit a specialist tea shop when I am near Cape Town in October.

  3. A great choice to not talk about the news! I really like the top image of this post with the books, glasses, the biscuit, and the coffee cup – great compositon.

  4. We used to call it sausage toad rather than toad-in-the-hole, but what’s in a name? Either way, it’s great comfort food, even better if you wash it down with a glass (or two!) of red.

  5. Is there someone in the class who lives near enough to you and drives, and would be willing to take you? You could compensate with money for fuel. Please remind me what toad in the hole is. Without knowing, it looks like… not something I’d eat?

    1. Someone has offered but I might just look elsewhere as I also need to get back to town after class.

Toad-in-the-hole is sausages with a batter – I make mine with beer and mustard. You can use vegetarian sausages of course. Excellent comfort food, served with onion gravy.

  6. It is SOOO difficult to not discuss the news here (USA). Sometimes, however, when someone visits the garden, we do manage, for awhile. I wish I were more like you and could offer delicious food (I don’t like cooking and there’s no good bakery on hand!). My biggest revelation here is that you don’t drive, and neither do I. In Seattle, that didn’t much affect my social life because there was a good public transit service. Here in a small town area, with a pretty poor bus system that doesn’t even service half of our peninsula, my social life is tiny because I can’t just drive up to a friend’s house when they say how nice it would be if I could come visit, and sometimes one wants to visit a friend one on one’s own not even with one’s spouse as the driver. Same with events, that and my natural introversion has turned me into quite a recluse. My only advantage is I have a garden that garden lovers want to come and see! Now if I could add a wonderful tea party, I could lure friends in more easily. 😉

    1. I’ve always lived in cities with good public transport. Wellington operates on a sort of ‘spoke and wheel’ idea where it is easy to get to town but not to the next suburb.

Having a garden to enjoy is a real blessing.

  7. Your sunrise photos are lovely – worth getting up early to see. I’ve just finished a cup of Shanghai Breakfast tea which was delicious and I’m up to episode 51 of Masterchef and looking forward to seeing which of these amazing home cooks wins. Have a great week.
