Thistles and Kiwis

While our small patch of garden continues to bring joy in terms of drying laundry, watching cheeky blackbirds, getting visits from kererū and just having an outdoor space, there isn’t really a whole lot to report, hence my silence for a month. Anyway, here are six wee things from our garden in the middle of winter. Anyway, thanks to Jim at Garden Ruminations, for hosting Six on Saturday, whose knowledge of all things plants and gardening makes him an ideal host and move on to what can be see at the moment outside.

First up, we have had lots of little mushrooms pop up all over the place, such as the one below. Just something I see a lot right now in the garden rather than anything else.

There is daffodil progress to report, with two bowls showing signs of early blooms. There are already daffodils in bloom around the corner from our house – such is winter here!

The what I believe to be some sort of convolvulus (the plant was here when we moved in) is also starting to flower which is lovely to see on chilly mornings.

The rosemary seems to like its new position, and I must do something about moving it from the pot it is in once warmer days are here. I still have a good supply or thyme and parsley for the kitchen too.

The pineapple sage is flowering – I have no idea when it normally flowers here any more. Anyway. a joy to behold these crimson flowers.

Finally, the skies this morning. I also think it time to make use of maramataka or the Māori lunar calendar to guide the best time for planting, resting and…..fishing….though I won’t be doing any of that.

Anyway, really just popped in to say hello to everyone. Hope you are all well and enjoying your gardens in whatever the season is with you.

  5. Pineapple sage usually flowers in your winter I think. We often have had ours flowering at the same time. Autumn here, but I won’t have flowers this year as my plant almost died over the winter. Nice to see your blue sky, we’ve not had many of those either!

  6. It’s funny the calendar you shared with us. I’ll try ! We have something like this called the lunar calendar with days when one can do some job in the garden ( root , leaf and seeds) and days to avoid. Something that the ancients used a lot.
    Regarding your Six, congrats on the parsley! It’s still beautiful

    1. I am sure the lunar cycle does influence things more than we normally think – not just tides but also if there is more light at night, how does that affect plant growth and so on. I am so pleased with my current parsley plant, keeping going during the winter.

  9. Your herbs are thriving indeed! I’ve never seen pineapple sage in bloom. I have some culinary sage in my garden and I love touching the leaves and getting that lovely scent on my fingers as I pass by. Thank you for sharing your garden.

  11. They have a pineapple sage at my mom’s care home. Our summers are so short that I wonder if it will bloom? It’s quite lovely, isn’t it, and very fragrant when I touched it.
