If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would talk about baking, about this fantastic seasonally appropriate apple and cinnamon cake from Tilly Pamment’s The Plain Cake Appreciation Society and how every cake we have made from that has been excellent.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would chat about how cold it has been in the early mornings, and I say have you seen the forecast for the King’s Birthday holiday weekend? And you say no, and I say it looks like some warmer days are returning. You say oh good!

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would mention the situation in New Caledonia over the past two weeks. I say I must listen to this podcast on the situation, and you say yes it looks interesting, and we agree that Deb of Deb’s World will have to cancel her long planned holiday there.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would turn to lighter matters, and you would say you had finally bought this to scoop out pasta or other things. You say it looks useful, and I say I hope so – we will see.

If we were having coffee…of even a cup of tea…I would ask you to stay for dinner. I have made a big pot of soup, filled with split peas, celery, carrots, cavolo nero and a few frozen peas for colour. You say that sounds lovely, and when I tell you there will be cheese and ham toasties on the side, you say even better. So we sit down to dinner and a glass of wine and more conversation.

  1. Oh that cake does look yummy! We are still having rather cold mornings but thankfully it’s finally warming up by mid-day and feeling like spring/summer.

  2. This is definitely soup weather and, having voted in our general elections today, a glass of wine is called for this evening. Thank you for such an uplifting post.

  3. Hi Barbara, the soup sounds delicious and nutritious so yes put me down for dinner next time you make it. I also like the apple and cinnamon cake which I might try to make. It is such a shame the way the situation is in New Caledonia isn’t it? The world is not a happy place at the moment so I value reading positive blogs like yours. Thanks for linking up at #WWWhimsy and enjoy the rest of your week. x

  4. I thought of you when I heard there was trouble in New Caledonia ..what a shame, I hope things settle and you can go there again.

Canberra has just turned into winter today, always makes me think of beaches and sunshine …somewhere!!

    1. Yes I do hope things settle down in New Caledonia for the country and its people. I understand Canberra can get very cold in winter. Beaches and sunshine are lovely things to dream about.

  5. Hi Barbara, thanks for your heartwarming post for #wwwhimsy this week. I’m still trying to get out of our trip to New Caledonia but it seems we will lose some money by doing so, even though we have travel insurance. It doesn’t seem fair so I’m hoping things change (from airlines etc) in the next few days. Thanks for thinking of me!

  6. Everything I’ve cooked from that cookbook has been a winner. One of those books I suspect I’ll be cooking from still in years. Set a place for me for that soup.

  7. The apple pie looks perfect as a pie can be! I bet it was delicious. We’ll have to wait a few months for apples to be in season here, but perhaps I’ll ask you about the recipe then. Thank you for the coffee and dinner invitation!
