I’ve been up in Auckland this week on a work trip, getting home last night in time to relax with a slice of pizza before bed. It was a good trip, but of course it was nice to get home. The day started sunny at least, and when the weather is good I cut through Parliament grounds. The playground – yes there is a children’s playground in the grounds of Parliament – was empty at 7:30am – but on Saturday mornings when I go to Pilates, it is often busy. The playground was opened on International Children’s Day in 2019, and was was a little controversial at the time due to the cost. The slide in the centre was manufactured in Palmerston North from sustainable forest beech and I can tell you is well used.
I walked out through the gate below, with the insignia of iron gates George V, who was the monarch when the gates were made, and what I guess is the date they were installed, 1913.
On leaving the grounds, the Wellington Cenotaph sits before you, commemorating the dead of the two world wars. Listed by Heritage New Zealand, it is the city’s focus for the annual Anzac Day commemorations.
Walking along Lambton Quay, I stopped at Dough Bakery to pick up a sandwich for lunch. Today I picked up a pastrami and cheese, with pickles and salad on a lovely soft rye bread – another great sandwich to brighten up the middle of the working day.
Walking home through the Hungarian Garden on the way home, I spotted these roses – I believe the red one is an alpine rose. So pretty to see as the three leaders of the political parties that will be running the country get together to try to decide the terms of their working arrangements, as wars continue and as Japan gets a new island.

I think both roses are dog roses, which probably have big hips in the autumn? You have a lovely walk to work.

I will watch and see come the autumn. The walk is not quite as nice as the old one through the Botanic Gardens, but shorter and there is still a lot to see.

Thus sent me in a tangent to read about the recent government change in N.Z. – we also have a coalition government at the moment, and it often means good things get done as they are forced to work together.
