A seat at the table: Shed 5

For a pre-Valentine’s Day treat, we went to Shed 5 on Thursday evening after my Pilates class. It was a gorgeous, sunny evening, and there were lots of people sitting outside with after work drinks, enjoying the evening light.

We hadn’t been here for dinner for a few years, deciding to come back for a change from our usual places. The restaurant is in one of the old wharf stores by the waterfront, and was apparently a woodshed in its past life.

To start, I could not resist the te kouma oysters from The Coromandel with a granny smith and cucumber mignonette, while Karl had some bread with an olive oil/balsamic vinegar dip. We enjoyed Deutz Prestige Cuvee sparkling wine with our first course for a real early Valentine’s treat.

For the ‘main event’, I had snapper with smoked mussel creme fraiche, green onion fried potatoes, watercress, baby spinach and caper salsa, which was really lovely, the smoked mussel creme fraiche in particular. Karl had a large plate of fish and chips, which got a big thumbs up. We each had a glass of Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, a really lovely wine I must keep my eyes open for.

As usual, we were rather too full for dessert, but I did have a chocolate Tia Maria truffle with my coffee. All in all, a very special treat, to celebrate and enjoy life.

  1. What a delicious meal to celebrate Valentine’s Day! We enjoyed all the meals we had in Wellington. And I always choose a Marlborough wine if it is on the menu, although I should say that quietly as Australia has some lovely wines too. 🌞

  2. It all looks Devine, and you should always order dessert first as you can often reheat the main course at home, and have a wonderful meal the next day. I have done this for years and it always makes the wait staff repeat themselves and chuckle.
