Weekend coffee share: Sunday morning

I’ve been asked by Natalie the Explorer to participate in a weekend coffee share, where bloggers from around the globe come together to chat and share their stories of the week. So on this Sunday morning, New Zealand time, let’s share some stories of the week while we drink a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a cheese scone (see the featured image at the top of the post).

The news…

Where to start? In amongst ever alarming news about Covid-19 (it is a year since a notice was sent to smartphones in Wuhan to announce the world’s first coronavirus lockdown), the mess that is Brexit and that a quarter of known bee species have not been recorded since 1990, there were some bright spots of hope. In Iceland, a man received the world’s first double arm and shoulder transplant, the mysterious birth of new eagle ray pups in Auckland, and of course the inauguration of Joe Biden. On Thursday, as I made my way to town for my Pilates class, I noticed that the lights in one of the cable car tunnels had been rearranged to look like the Stars and Stripes when all lit, I guess to honour the inauguration. Side note: the cable car in Wellington is a famous mode of transport from Kelburn down to the city. Two of the tunnels have light displays that change from time to time.

Lunch breaks in the city

I work in the city, and always make sure I get a walk at lunch time. Often there are small errands to run, but sometimes it is nice to pop into an exhibition and really switch off from work. On Monday, I went to the summer exhibition at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Works are for sale, and I really liked this planter with poppies and cornflowers, so made a note of the potter so I can keep my eyes open for her work.

This week I also added two more coasters to my collection of these wonderful additions to the table by Avenida Home. The new ones are the top two. Don’t you just love them?

Cinema and cake

Finally, if we were sitting enjoying our Sunday morning catch up, I would tell you about the film I went to see on Wednesday evening, Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles. The film documents the collaboration between Ottolenghi and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the process of constructing a food gala based on the art art exhibit Visitors to Versailles. We follow five leading pastry chefs as they design their confectionaries for the event, and see the final produce on the day. A lovely little film, it would be a perfect interlude on a Sunday afternoon with, of course, a cup of tea and a piece of cake.
