Postcards from Stockholm 1

The weather on Sunday was gorgeous and sunny and so perfect for walking about. We were staying in Södermalm, and of course had to stroll past Katarina Kyrka, a famous landmark in the area. The original building was constructed between 1656 and1695, but has been rebuilt twice after being destroyed by fires. The graves of some famous Swedes can be found in the cemetery (one some of you might know was Anna Lindh, the foreign minister who was assassinated while out shopping).

We continued our walk stopping to look at interesting streets and buildings, and take a picture of the city I used in the featured image in my last post.

We ended up walking along the water, past all the allotments, and eventually finding somewhere to sit and have a much needed cold beer. Total number of steps on Sunday: 17,234 according to my phone.

On Monday, before we got the keys for the flat we are staying in in Vasastan, we went for another walk this time stopping at Maria Magdalena church.

In the graveyard we found the last resting place of the poet Erik Johan Stagnelius who came from Karl’s home town.

After we got our keys, we went off to find the supermarket and other essential things in the area. There is a real mix of the old and the new nearby as you can see. The colours just pop against the blue skies.

So…the first in what will no doubt be a series of postcards from Stockholm.

  1. Thank you for taking me to Stockholm! I immediately recognized the cobbled streets from my Amsterdam trip (but had failed to take photos). I love the blue skies and photos of the Maria Magdalena church, as well as its graveyard. How lovely to take up residence, with the joys of a visitor and the acquired familiarity of a local. Have fun! (And definitely drink beer after 17,000 steps!)

  2. Have not been to Stockholm for years and am so looking forwards to walking the streets with you. At the moment it still looks cold with not much greenery to soften the landscape . . . hope you get organized ‘feeling at home’ soon . . . 🙂 !
