Close to where we are based, is Ottensen, an area of the city full of cafes, independent shops, and lots of interesting buildings (including the bar called Karl I mentioned in the last post). On Saturday, we had a good walk around, and I returned on Tuesday for a further browse of the shops (because this is much easier to do on one’s own!). Anyway, below are some of the buildings I spotted.
I loved this Weinstube, complete with a large bunch of grapes. It was closed, but it might be fun to see what it looks like inside.

When we stopped for a beer, I spotted this face up at the top of the building opposite. He looks like a 16th century adventurer – what do you think?

There are all sorts of shops, from clothes to flowers, from kitchen equipment to nuts. The sign with the squirrel is for a shop selling, yes nuts, and other snacks. I need to go back and have a look inside rather than just through the window.
The buildings below include one called Photo Haus – I would love to find out more about this building and might see what I can find. The florist in the third picture has featured in other posts with its wonderful displays.
Finally, look through the alley to the bright blue house beyond. I wanted to go and take more pictures here on Tuesday but there were workmen busy with something, so that will have to wait until another day.

So, these are my postcards from Ottensen, Hamburg. More postcards hopefully next week.

I love all of these buildings. The one selling nuts looks intriguing.

Fascinating city. I think the guy on the building looks like a pirate! The alley shot is a keeper–the contrast of the graffiti with the blue building makes a great shot.

Yes you could be right about the pirate! Thanks for the comment about the alley. I’d like to go back and take another look.

Love this series! So much interesting architecture and lots of tempting shops. As far as the face at the top of the building…I can’t peg what he looks like. I am reading this on my phone, and maybe I need a bigger screen to enlarge it. Anyway, love armchair traveling with you.

Yes, I thoroughly loved my walk also .. . looked, left, right, up-and-down . . . loved the kitchenware’s shop being ‘frech’ enough to tell you to ‘Schau doch mal rein’ as if you would really be silly not to 🙂 !

These pictures are proof that tall buildings do not have to be sull and uniform looking. The various details, from decorations to the placing of windows are so refreshing to see 🙂 🙂

Beautiful pictures! I never made it to Hamburg myself (it’s about 700 km from here), but have friends who visit/ed once or regularly and one even fell in love with it and moved there.

Thank you! There is a lot to see here and because we are not just tourists, you get a feel for a place quite differently.

What fun! And thank you for calling our attention to the face of the “explorer.” You might be right! Meanwhile, I’ve been admiring the face of the fellow above the door in your first photo — helmet and mustache included! Keep “sending” these wonderful postcards to all of us ….

The helmeted gentleman is fun too (and I found some more interesting faces for an upcoming post).
