Tucked away on Taranaki Street is August Eatery, a great place for lunch or coffee on any day of the week. The food could be said to be ‘Mediterranian inspired’, full of fresh herbs, strong flavours and interesting combinations. The building is part of the heritage listed Methodist church complex (you can see just a bit of the actual church in the featured image at the top of the post). On sunny days, you can sit outside on the pink stools and watch the world go by.

A favourite on the menu, and a dish that has featured on the blog before is the Istanbul eggs (poached eggs with Greek yoghurt, Aleppo pepper butter, dill and sourdough toast), which is quite wonderful. Their soups are always excellent too, and there is always a decent selection of cakes (the Basque cheesecake is amazing), pastries and of course, scones.
It is a great place to just sit and read while enjoying lunch, but today I met a friend for lunch. The current menu features a couple of good sounding salads, so I opted for the roast chicken, tarragon, radiccio, pearl couscous, nigella and pumpkin seeds topped with parsley, and my friend had the stuffed capsicum with rice, mint, parsley, currants with tzatziki and crispy chickpeas. Both plates were full of fresh flavours, perfectly cooked grains and lots of greens, and were really satisfying lunches without feeling over stuffed.
We ordered more tea after, me opting for a rather nice strawberry plum one, which was really refreshing on a rather humid day. Should you be at that end of town, it is a great option in an otherwise pretty café free zone. It is also dog friendly.

This is the fourth in an occasional series I plan on doing about favourite cafés in the city. Not sure where next….

Our five year old grandson is called August. He’d be thrilled to find a cafe named for him. 🙂 Especiallly if they do good milkshakes.

August eatery looks like a lovely spot with great food. The Turkish eggs really appeal, one of my favourites to make myself as well.

I love the views and catch ups with food and a friend stories. I could not, however, even think about balancing on one of those pink ‘stools’? Ha

The stuffed pepper looks delicious – not sure how comfortable the pink stools would be though!

The food looks tasty: we have been on vacation at the beach and while I have eaten some good healthy breakfasts, some of my meals have been a little heavy.
