Words on Wednesday: café life

Today turned out to be a glorious sunny day, and after Pilates I headed over to one of my favourite cafés in Wellington, Squirrel. Regular readers will have been here with me before, but if you haven’t, then this is a lovely wee café with good food and a comfortable feel to it – exactly what you want in fact. The motto – simple done well – sums it up perfectly.

The teapots come from India, and go well with the feel of the place, which also features some furniture from there. I had one of their ‘Maude’s chicken sandwich’, named after the owner’s dog. It is made with toasted bread, and stuffed full with chicken, a herby crème fraîche, almonds, capers and rocket. An excellent sandwich that I highly recommend, and if you don’t fancy that, there are scones, cakes and wonderful toasts (and in fact they won this years prize for best value avocado toast at the Wellington Avocado Toast Awards (yes there is such a thing…) this year.

The café is connected to Small Acorns, a shop full of interior design products, from candle to soap, from furniture to cushions, as well as fresh flowers. I picked up a soap refill and had a good browse.

You can find both Squirrel and Small Acorns on Blair Street. This is the second in an occasional series I plan on doing about favourite cafés in the city.

  1. Simple done well is one of my favorite things. (Not an easy thing to do.) Wonderful teapot. First thing I noticed. And, a tour of cafés in your city? Yes, please!

  2. I don’t know what we could do to match the Wellington Avocado Toast Awards here in Langholm. Perhaps the annual meeting of the Haggis Appreciation Society will have to do.

  3. I enjoyed reading about the chicken sandwich Barbara. Decades ago a cafe in our local big shops used to make one very similar and my daughter and I ordered it. It was called The Glade after the name of the original cafe. Sigh! I miss it.
