Words on Wednesday: taking it slow

It is Wednesday evening, and we are sitting down to Masterchef Australia, full of delicious food, and planning our short trip away. The day started very frosty and cold, with the need for gloves and maybe a wooly hat.

Anyway, it is citrus season, and a colleague at work brought in bags of lemons from her tree, and I brought a bunch home that I hope I have a moment to make some lemon curd or maybe preserved lemons with. How gorgeous – and one of the small pleasures of the week to be sure.

The day began with a much treated trip to the osteopath to sort out my lower back, followed by also much needed Pilates. I have now had my last visit to the physio at least, and the crutch has been returned. Now just to keep building up the strength and flexibility! After Pilates, I stopped for lunch at new favourite The Bond Street Deli where I enjoyed a smoked salmon bagel with pickles on the side. The lemon cream cheese and lots of capers made this an excellent choice.

Wellington on a Plate has started, and tonight we went for our first Burger Wellington at Apachè. Their Banh Ga was a spicy fried chicken with Vietnamese paté, Asian herbs, delcious crunchy pickles and burger sauce in a Brezelmania potato bun with, of course, chips. It was very good, rich and full of all sorts of flavours. I recommend you go hungry!

Anyway, we are off on a mini break tomorrow and I have been given some very good advice from Tilly and Spark (check out their adventures on Instagram @tilly_and_spark_bolt).

  1. One of my granddaughters made jars of lemon curd while she was visiting – absolutely delicious! You remind me that I should pick more of our lemons, which are ripening well now 🙂 Enjoy your break!

  2. Hi Barbara, I love the little glimpses we get of life living in Wellington NZ via your posts … particularly the food! Yum Yum! Ok – and the architecture and landscapes. It’s all food for the soul. I received a heap of lemons from a friends tree recently too. I think I might make some lemon butter and I’ll need to come up with more than that to use them all up! lol Hope you have a wonderful holiday! Thanks for linking up and sharing with us at #WWWhimsy xo

  3. Your bounty of lemons reminds me that this is the second year I have not made “lemon butter” for me and My Dad…as he died in early 2024. It was a fave of his, and Mum’s recipe too. Now I think I want some!

      1. Yes it is. It’s a spread like consistency. And now you have reminded me of lemon meringue pies…they can be so simple made using condensed milk and a store bought shell of pastry. Yum
