Thistles and Kiwis

I was last here with a SoS post back in April, but with signs of spring in the middle of what is still winter, I thought I would hop on and share what is going on in our very little patch of green.

So first up…two little muscari. Yes – the flowers I never have luck with. I spotted these specks of blue from the window and was so surprised to see them. A pleasure of course!

Another surprise was a few crocus popping up in a pot I had forgotten about and had thought had nothing in it. You can see the pot needs a bit of weeding!

Meanwhile, the herb garden is doing pretty well with the plants moved to the bed now quite established. The pineapple sage, since being repotted, seems to flower all the time. I do love its bright red flowers.

There are more signs of springs with bulbs popping up all over. I will come back here at a later date once there are more flowers to show off.

The featured image and the picture below is of the convolvulus, taken on Wednesday after a shower of rain. The flowers are really pretty, open or closed.

Finally, the paperwhite ariel daffodils which do bloom early in the season are beginning to bloom and are such a delight to see, and my first go at having these in the garden.

  1. Aren’t these signs of spring earlier than other years? Do muscaris and crocuses usually arrive at the same time? Have a good time watching All Blacks/France this morning ! (if you’re watching as I am)

  3. It’s lovely to see the first signs of spring, isn’t it? It can really list your spirits and those muscari would do it for me every time!

  14. It is very odd to see these signs of spring in what feels to me should be the middle of your winter as we are in the middle of summer here. How long does your winter last?

    1. Even though we have lived here for almost 13 years I am still not completely au fait with the seasons. If you asked me and my husband, we would say winter lasts 6 weeks, but then we spent most of our lives in Scotland and Scandinavia! There is no ‘oh hoorah it is spring!’ moment, the seasons sort of blend into each other.

  16. You must have a very short winter! If only we did I could cope with it. Lovely signs of the early spring bulbs and the daffodils are very nice – are they scented? They look as though they should be. A for my pineapple sage I can now say it is well and truly dead. What I though might be new shoots turned out to be weeds! Oh, well. I shall enjoy looking at yours.

Well, as I said to Mr Tootlepedal , my husband and I think the winters are short here, and to be honest, other than a couple of frosty mornings, it hasn’t been cold at all this year (to us being brought up in Scotland and Sweden!). I believe the daffodils are supposed to be scented, but I haven’t noticed it – will check tonight when I get home. The pineapple sage has managed to keep going.
