Words on Wednesday

Regular readers will know that I don’t (normally) work on Wednesdays. This morning a visit to the osteopath, followed by tea and an Anzac biscuit before heading to Pilates. It was a lovely sunny, if chilly day, so I went out without my crutch for the first time for a full morning – hoorah!

I had lunch at The Bond Street Deli, a lovely wee place, which I must put on my regular lunch rotation list. Like last time, I opted for the tuna salad bagel. This tuna salad is definitely the best in the city (even better than the one I used to think was the best…), and simply served with pickles. Such a good lunch, I need to try something else next time I go.

I popped into Unity Books to get myself a birthday treat (tomorrow is the day), and decided on Nigel Slater’s A Thousand Feasts, which I have been meaning to read for some time. I’m trying, but far from always succeeding, to document cooking and eating this year, so hoping this will motivate me to keep going.

I got around to doing three weeks of ironing in the afternoon, using this lavender spray to refresh things. Please don’t tell me you don’t iron any more, or wonder why I do. I have things that need ironing which I enjoy using like this white tablecloth.

After reading for a bit, I set about making our dinner, seeking inspiration from Julia Busuttil Nishimura’s lovely book Around the Table, and making her sausage, cannellini bean and cavolo nero soup. I used tinned beans and tinned tomatoes, the first for ease the second because at this time of year one doesn’t buy fresh tomatoes to put into soup. We had some ciabatta bread along side.

Then it was time to relax with Australian Masterchef, puzzles and…well…catching up on blog posts!

  1. Having Wednesdays off sounds wonderful. I still iron. I have a steamer for small jobs but I still have a full sized ironing board in my laundry room. When I was growing up my mama ironed everything. I think it is therapeutic sometimes.

  2. Sometimes a day alone is the best gift we can give ourselves. I remember my mom spending several hours ironing every Sunday evening. She even ironed the bed sheets! One of the first appliances I purchased when we moved to France was an iron; it’s a necessity. I hope you have a wonderful birthday. 🎂🎁🎊🎈🍷

  3. Hi Barbara, what a lovely morning you had. A cuppa and an Anzac biscuit and pilates sound perfect. I don’t iron regularly but I hear you with the tablecloth. The lavendar spray is a nice idea so I might try that, thanks for the tip. Happy birthday and I hope you have a special day! Sue L xx

  4. Happy Birthday! Well it will be now I think. Love the sound of that soup, one I shall have to make come winter. As for ironing, I don’t do much now as neither of us works so we only wear casual clothes, but I still like to iron pillowcases and duvet covers!

  5. Hi Barbara, and Happy Birthday to you! I hope you have a wonderful day! You certainly had a gorgeous day yesterday. The birthday treat book you bought yourself looks like it’ll be a good read and that soup looks delicious! I must admit I don’t like ironing. I used to stand there for hours doing the hubby’s work shirts and all the kids school uniforms etc. These days – I iron as I need things. I’m enjoying the Australian Masterchef this season too! Thanks for sharing with us at #WWWhimsy – have a great birthday and a fabulous July! xo

    1. Thank you! Unfortunately it rained all day yesterday, but I still had a nice time and went out for a fabulous meal in the evening. I think this series of Masterchef has been quite fun. Thanks for hosting #WWWhimsy!

  6. Happy Birthday and I commend your choice of gift! By the way, I enjoy ironing and Mary would never iron my shirts – after all, there is a certain way to do them properly!

  7. Happy birthday to you Barbara! I hear you about ironing, I find it can be therapeutic and some things just need it don’t they? Great to hear you went out without the crutch too. Have a great week.
