A slow day

Sometimes, we just need to take it slow, not rush, take our time and consider the small things around us. I woke up early as usual on Wednesday (6am) but made myself stay in bed for at least another 15 minutes. I packed up a bag with some laundry to take downstairs, then made myself some tea, ate a leisurely breakfast and then went back upstairs for a shower and to get dressed. This is a real treat for me since on a working day I jump into the shower, grab breakfast and get out of the door to catch my bus.

The weather was not inviting me to leave the house – this was the sky at 8am – with heavy rain falling and grey skies. It wasn’t cold though – just very wet.

Anyway, it stopped just at the right time as I had to head out to Pilates. I donned my purple jeans since it was such a dull day and a touch of colour was called for. The flowers by the bus stop (featured image at the top of the post) also added some colour to the day. I hopped on the bus into town and arrived first at the class, hence me peeping through the curtain at the changing rooms to the studio.

Then it was time for lunch, and to make the most of a moment of blue skies and sunshine. I always love the shape of this building, and the trees in front make it look like it is somewhere exotic. It was built in 1960 and was the original home of the New Zealand Racing Conference. The street art next to it is a work dedicated to Orchestra Wellington and I am pretty sure these bits of the city have been featured in the blog before.

The sign on the pavement marks where the Wellington shore line was in 1840. The 8.2 quake centered on the Wairapapa coast lifted the Rimutaka ranges by six metres, caused a 4m-high tsunami in Wellington harbour and uplifted the northwestern side of Wellington. That plus reclaimed land has meant that the current coastline looks rather different now.

I went to old favourite Pickle & Pie on Lombard Street and enjoyed their special of the week, a potato latke topped with avocado, celery, smoked salmon and some other bits of salad. Very delicious it was too.

I got home just in time before the heavens opened again, having lots of time to finish my book, potter around and make a pot of pea soup for dinner to have with garlic bread (which I forgot to take a picture of). The rain eventually stopped again and this was the sky at 8:15pm. A good day, despite the changeable weather.

  1. Thanks for this peep into your day Barbara! I love the purple jeans and slower pace to your day. They are such a nice break from the ‘get up and go’ days.

  2. The older I get, the more I crave slow days. Not days filled with boredom but rather no rushing from task to task.

    Love those purple pants.

Interesting to read how the coast has changed so much.

  3. How serendipitous that I was advocating “slow” for #wwwhimsy as well!

Rainy days are made for slowing down, whether by choice or not. It sounds like it wasn’t a bad day at all. I love your purple jeans and boots (purple is my favourite colour) – I imagine your outfit was very snazzy! and colourful for a grey day!

  4. I’ve been incorporating slow mornings into my week, Barbara and it is lovely especially in the cooler weather. Sometimes it is nice not to have to rush anywhere and enjoy your morning coffee or tea. I’m sure it is much cooler where you are although this morning in Brisbane it was 6C which is very cool for us. Have a lovely weekend and hope you are feeling better. Sue L #WWWhimsy xx

  5. It’s beautiful how you turned an ordinary morning into a mindful moment. Sometimes the most meaningful part of our day is when we pause long enough to feel it.

  6. It sounds like a very nice day.
My own days are mostly slow (health related), but still not all mindful. I might have to work on that a bit more.
