Words on Wednesday

On Sunday afternoon, Karl started to complain of a headache, and come Monday, I was feeling the same. We both seem to have come down with some sort of cold – aches, lack of energy, stuffiness – but definitely not Covid. The result is we have both been at home sick for a couple of days. Just what I need right now with a pretty full diary for the end of the week. Ah well….rest, tea, some good detective novels and cooking videos have got me through so far.

I had bought some Jerusalem artichokes to make soup today, something I have featured before in the blog several times with it being a favourite in this house during the cooler months of the year. It isn’t the cheapest of veggies, but we all need a treat from time to time. The biggest problem making this soup is peeling the roots themselves…but stick on a good podcast (like this one featuring one of our favourite local chefs) and time soon passes. Somehow I found the energy to do this since we had both been looking forward to this evening’s dinner – and surely this is full of goodness?

I always use this Hairy Bikers recipe, as well as a little potato. I used up one of the small leeks I have sitting in the fridge this time instead of an onion, and served it with ciabatta from our local deli, a sprinkling of parsley, a swirl of cream, and some optional bacon bits. Very good it was too!

The ‘exciting’ news is that I walked on my own round to our the deli without my stick for the bread and chocolate chip cookies to have with our afternoon cup of tea. This brought me a lot of joy and compensates for feeling crook. One small step…… 🙂

  1. I’m sorry to hear you are both unwell but I’m sure the soup was nourishing. Yay that you could walk to the deli without help! Take care and rest up. Sue L X

  2. It is the season I guess for coughs and colds, but they are pretty miserable all the same. Wishing you both a speedy recovery. I have never tried Jerusalem artichokes (I had read they can cause flatulence so best to be avoided at a dinner party) and peeling them looks a lot like peeling celeriac, which I do like. The end result does look rather tasty.

    1. Feeling a bit better today at least. The soup is good if you can get hold of Jerusalem artichokes – not easy to find but there is one shop here I know you can get them. Thanks for hosting!

  5. Hope you are feeling better by now Barbara and can still do some of the things you had planned for the week.

Love your Moomin mug – it is so whimsical & cheery!

Your soup looks divine. Jerusalem artichokes: another new vegetable which you have introduced me to … now, to see if we can get any here.

    1. Today I feel like I have turned a corner and feeling a bit better. We love our collection of Moomin mugs.

Jerusalem artichokes do have a special taste and are found late autumn/winter.

  6. I’ve never tried the artichoke in a soup but there always seems to be some sort of flu doing the rounds. I’ve only had covid once and never want to get it again it was pretty bad for us.
