The first of May arrived, and the new month brought with it some wild weather. Between Wednesday and Friday morning, MetService reported that the wettest parts of the city had between 120 and 150mm of rain. As for the wind…..on Thursday, Wellington Airport had its strongest southerly wind since 2013 at 118kph. Waves of 12 metres were measured off Baring Head, and Mount Kaukau weather station in Wellington was no longer working after wind gusts of up to 150kph hit the peak. Flights and ferries were cancelled, schools, colleges and universities sent students home, events were cancelled. Coastal areas were badly affected, but at home all was fine, if windy. We kept on working at the work visit I was on, nevertheless, and by today things were calming down, though the rain and winds made everything feel very cold.
It is very much about staying at home and keeping cosy, so this evening we went to our local butcher to pick up some sausages, and some lamb for the weekend. We have opened a bottle of good red wine, put on The Truman Show, and am sitting with a pile of cookbooks planning the weeks meals.
Anyway, the weather looks better for the weekend, and there is ballet, reading time and cups of tea to look forward to.

Never as bad as this at this time of year normally. There were some record breaking wind speeds. It was worse down near Christchurch with flooding and areas cut off.

We weren’t really affected where we live – the worst weather was along the coast and up on the hills. Record breaking wind speeds.

One thing about reading blogs from the opposite hemisphere is the reminder of the difference in seasons. We’re in full spring now and wondering if it will be a hot and dry summer. There are already wildfires in some parts of British Columbia.
Reading your post I felt nostalgic for autumn!

It sounds like a wild storm! How nice to be able to stay inside and be cosy. What are you reading right now? I visited our beautiful library right after the garden yesterday. I came home with four books in a series of a historic novel that takes place at Orust and in Denmark, by the author Maria Gustavsdotter (it is five books in the series, but unfortunately our library is missing one of the books.) I am reading the first book now and the year is 1644. So far it is well written and very exciting.

It was! I have just started a Japanese detective novel which is good so far. I just finished ‘Three’ by Valerie Perrin. It was quite good if long.

Yes I heard Welly got quite a battering, we got some of the storm for 2 days, it sure was freezing here. Now we have blue skies which is nice.
