Wednesday morning dawned, with the knowledge that the day is a non-working day. A slow breakfast, a load of laundry done and then I went out and braved the bus with my moon boot and headed to Pilates. While I can’t do a lot of my usual routine, I can to plenty, and enjoyed the camaraderie of the class, the stretching and just moving my body.
From there it was the optician, to update my prescriptions following the cataract operation. I was pleased to find a lift to take me up there as I did not fancy climbing up Plimmer Steps (if you know Wellington, sure you will agree) with a moon boot! Anyway, all was well, and I even caught a bus home, after a fun moment when a woman about my age came up to me and said ‘I just got my moon boot off last week – good luck!’
I stopped at the library cafe for a toastie and tea, then headed home for an afternoon of reading and making meatballs. I actually featured these pork, pumpkin and sage meatballs from my well-used edition of Seffi Knowles-Dellner’s Lagom back in 2023. They are a great way of using pumpkin from the Wonky Box (especially when Karl isn’t keen on it), and with the apple and sage, make them a great autumnal dish. We had the tenderstem broccoli with it, some tagliatelle and the lemon cream sauce that is part of the dish.

I had email from a friend I hadn’t heard from for ages, read a good chunk of a gripping thriller, contemplated the next few days ahead and even cleaned the dishwasher. The evening was spent with the small screen, catching up on email and looking at the clouds rolling in (see featured image).

Looked up your meatballs . . . these will definitely be copied ! . . . And wonder how your optician prescriptions fared after your cataract surgery . . . Mine were in September and November and my macular degeneration sure did not like them 😦 !

I am glad life is treating you well. It is encouraging to hear from someone no longer needing to wear her moon boot too. Reading is an excellent way to relax.

It was so nice that she came up to me and spoke – just a random act of kindness.

I really like how you press on, regardless of the boot. Such a pretty sky! I fact, such a pretty city.

I’m trying to be sensible in between outings! The meatballs are so good – worth the effort of grating veggies to go into the mix.

Oh thank you so much! I was feeling a bit down this morning, putting on my boot and setting up working at home and your comment has so cheered me up – thank you.

Hi Barbara, I love days where I don’t have early appointments. I enjoy having my coffee and easing into the day. I’m glad the moon boot isn’t holding you back although I’m sure you will be glad when it is removed. Sounds like your non work day was very enjoyable. Take care. Sue L #Teamwwwhimsy

Yes – those days when there is time to savour breakfast and, for me, a second cup of tea. Yes I will be glad when the boot goes. I’ve had it for a week already – only 5 more to go I guess…..

I will have to get used to walking normally when it comes off I think! I can’t let it stop my life though…..

Hi Barbara, that sounds like the most wonderful day to me – except maybe for the moon boot! I hope you’re free of that soon and back to functioning as normal. Those meatballs look and sound delicious! Thanks so much for linking up with us at #WWWhimsy – enjoy the rest of your week & weekend! xo

I just love this sentence: While I can’t do a lot of my usual routine, I can to plenty, and enjoyed the camaraderie of the class, the stretching and just moving my body. It’s so important for us to focus on what we can do in times of recovery or during any life challenge really. Happy healing to you!

I still have it on – for at least another 2-3 weeks, probably more.
