Postcard from Perth #1

We flew over to Perth on Saturday, Karl to attend a conference, me for a short break. It is a fair bit to travel from Wellington (we flew via Melbourne) and there is a 5 hour time difference, so we arrived more than ready for bed.

Anyway, Sunday dawned bright and sunny, and an old school friend who moved to Australia many moons ago picked us up and took us around the city for the day. It was wonderfully generous of him, and certainly an excellent way to start the trip.

We headed first to King’s Park, for wonderful views over the city, and to visit the State War Memorial. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

We then headed to South Perth and got a different view of the city. It was hot…over 30C…and sunny as you can see.

We stopped at Mindeerup creative precinct, enjoying these cute meerkats, frill neck lizard, numbat (just visible behind the lizard) and emus. Some of these pictures were taken by my friend Gordon.

  1. Wow! Just look at that sky! The temperature is scary though given it’s not yet summer. My son lived in South Perth and took a ferry to the centre for work. What a commute. It must have been fun to meet up with an old friend.

  3. Whilst we have family in Perth, we have never visited. It sure is a long way for you …and for us 3 hours time difference to Sydney. It was good to have someone who knows the place help orient you on arrival.

  4. How lovely Barbara! I’ve not been to Perth (or WA yet) so it’s great to see your photos and post. I love the meerkats, how cute! Thanks for jopining us for #WWWhimsy.

  5. What a fun adventure. The park is just beautiful. I did some reading about the memorial and all the things that go on within the park. I was curious about those red poppies? around the memorial. They look like crocheted flowers. Is that right? I tried to find some literature about those but couldn’t find anything. Beautiful memorial and park.

  6. I envy you being in Perth. I’ve had three trips over there and lived over there for 18 months, including living in Geraldton which was like living in the wild west by the sea. We were last over there in 2002. I’ve been over there on the Indian Pacific as a uni student sitting up with whole way with a week off in Adelaide. Don’t know how I did it now but I was young. Have you made it over to Rottnest Island? I loved it and the Quokkas are gorgeous. I remember one came into the shower and they were very friendly. Hope you enjoy the rest of your time there and it’s not too hot.

    Best wishes,

    Rowena
