I have been feeling distinctly under the weather the past few days, but needed to get out today for a needed appointment to do with my ears (my annual microsuction session – delightful!). I needed lunch, so headed over to favourite spot Fred’s on Cuba Street for one of their gorgeous tuna melt sandwiches.

As you can see, it was a beautiful sunny day, so I walked up to Paper Bag Princess second hand clothes shop where I found a nice black skirt – photo will follow at some point! I then popped into the wonderful Minerva (see featured image at the top of the post – which apparently doesn’t show on mobile phones) and found a 20th anniversary edition of Now We Are Sixty by Chirstopher Matthew. Those of you, like me, who grew up loving A A Milne’s Now We Are Six will instantly find this amusing and somewhat familiar in places in this tribute to the well loved book Matthew wrote back in 1999.

Probably the first poem I ever learned was Now I Am Six, and the ‘updated for age’ version is just as good.

Life (after The End)

When I was One
The War had begun.

When I was Ten
It was wartime again.

When I was Twenty
I thought I knew plenty

When I was Thirty
I liked to be flirty

WHen I was Forty
I got rather sporty

When I was Fifty
I got rather thrifty.

But now I am Sixty, I’ve got to confess
That more often or not, I couldn’t care less.

  2. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the featured book and poem. It sounds like you had a lovely day out and found some great items. The updated poem “Life (after The End)” seems quite delightful and relatable. It’s always nice to stumble upon a treasure at a second-hand shop.

  12. I am sorry you are still feeling under the weather. Fred’s sounds so good. I love a Tuna melt sandwich. Also love second hand stores and the name of yours is so catchy. I am not familiar with the Six and Sixty books. I will check them out. I hope you’re feeling better soon.

    1. The tuna melt at Fred’s is the best. They just get it right. Agree – paper bag princess is a great name for a second hand clothing store.

      Now We Are Six was written by A A Milne who wrote the Winnie the Pooh books.

    1. I’m feeling much better now thanks. Ah – Paper Bag Princess is a second hand clothing store. I bought the book in Minerva, a shop that sells books, cards and crafting things. The book isn’t second hand – just made to look old (though my copy of ‘Now We Are Six’ must be over 70 years old since it was my brother’s book).
