Six on Saturday 20 April 2024

Darker evenings and chilly mornings tell us we are really into autumn. The weather hasn’t been bad at all, with a good amount of sunshine. My bulbs have yet to arrive, but I did buy a bag of some miniature daffodils that I have already planted out. We are still sorting a few things inside, so just a very brief post – again – from our little patch of garden. Thanks to Jim at Garden Ruminations, for hosting Six on Saturday, whose knowledge of all things plants and gardening makes him an ideal host and move on to what can be see at the moment outside.

We popped to the garden centre the other week and picked up a few things including a new lemon thyme that is already growing well. I’ll move this on soon.

I also bought a new oregano, as the old one was permanently rooted in the old old place (as to the old place!). It is also looking good.

The pineapple sage that had done so well in the old old place, did not like the move, so I also got a new one of these. Fingers crossed!

The curry plants I had fell pray to the issues we had at the old old place (you may remember the slip and emergency evacuation….), so I also got myself a new one which seems to be settling in so far.

One plant that has survived, though showing signs of autumn, is the lemon verbena.

And the rosemary I have taken with me through both moves is also doing really well.

Anyway, really just popped in to say hello to everyone. Hope you are all well and enjoying your gardens in whatever the season is with you. The picture at the top of the post is a local variety of hebe.

  1. This local variety of hebe makes me want it as I have difficulty growing them here… Herbs are on the program this week, I also have to go and renew certain plants at the garden centre this weekend, like thyme , and lemon verbena. Have a good week-end

  2. Enjoy those herbs this winter!
Your rosemary looks great. This year, I actually managed to overwinter my big rosemary plant indoors (snipping at it frequently), so I must have found just the right spot, near the sink and it gets extra humidity.

  3. The Hebe is a pretty one. They do well here too. I must also refresh some of my herbs and buy new ones. I don’t think my pineapple sage has survived and some thymes are looking poorly. Your new ones are looking good.

      1. I left mine outside over winter (I usually do under shelter) but this year all the rain seems to have killed all my plants off.

  4. I know what you mean about permanently rooted oregano. I tried to dig mine up to reduce its size, and I ran out of steam. I will give it another go this weekend. I like to have it, but itis not very flavorful. It is enjoyed by digger wasps and soldier beetles among others.

      1. I figure growing conditions plays a role too. Best oregano I have had was from Greece, Mexican is better than I have been able to grow. I think too much rain, the aromatic oils don’t get concentrated maybe. But the insects like the flowers, so I will hack away at it so it isn’t taking up more space than it deserves.
