I grew up watching the sci-fi series Dr Who, and while I had no desire ever to meet Daleks or Cybermen, the thought of being in the TARDIS and seeing new worlds was kind of exciting. On Tuesday evening I almost got that wish.
As part of a collegue’s birthday celebrations, a group of us from work headed over to escape mate, an adventure game venue where you have to solve a number of puzzles to get to your goal, in this case to save the world from an alien invasion. The plot centred around the story of an alien spaceship that landed in Wellington in the 1930s and was locked away in a vault, with the event becoming an urban legend. So to the present day, and the spaceship has now been found, and it is discovered that it is sending a distress signal to its home planet. Our goal was to stop the invading forces….
The actual central unit of the ship did resemble the TARDIS a little which for me was kind of fun. The puzzles to solve were all different with objects to be found, buttons to press, lights that went on and off and several red herrings. Anyway, we finally deactivated the distress signal and you will be pleased to learn, saved the world from invasion. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside the room (the door into the room was indeed a proper bank vault door), but the website linked above gives some idea.

We then headed out for dinner to Shed 5. The birthday girl, who will be running the London Marathon in a few weeks, can be seen with her tiara below. We had a quiz (‘how much do you know about Vanessa?’ and a silly present opening as well. To eat, I opted for the seafood risotto which you can see below: all in all, the food and company were excellent.

If you like puzzles and having fun solving them, then this is a great way to spend some time with friends or colleagues. And I almost got a trip in the TARDIS.
Have you ever been to an escape room or similar? What did you think? And is that a UFO or just a black blob added to a photo of the sky at the top of the post?

A trip in a Tardis would be something else!

It would indeed! As long as I didn’t have to run from cybermen….

What a fun way to celebrate a birthday! And, phew, I was worried that you weren’t going to be able turn off that signal in time to save the world from the alien invasion. I am sure it will come as no surprise to learn that we are huge Dr. Who fans. Love that Tardis. And the opening music.

The restaurant looks gorgeous! I think I would join you for that and pass on the escape room which I think would make me claustrophobic and panicky.

The food was good! You could easily leave the escape room – we weren’t locked in. I was worried about that too but it was fine and we were too busy trying to solve the clues.

Well, you aren’t actually locked in so you would be able to escape 🙂

My teenage daughter loves escape rooms – I suspect the level of enjoyment relates to who you get ‘locked in’ with! great post, Linda x

I would love to travel in the TARDIS!
I’ve been in one escape room with a friend and her family. We really had a lot of fun, even though we needed a tiny bit of help from the outside. lol

Our house is full of Doctor Who fans so they would have loved that escape room. I have never done one but I think my husband and son would loved it. Glad you had such a good time! It looks like a blast.
