This week’s small pleasures #379

The removal men came on Tuesday morning, swiftly carrying all our stuff out to the van and unloading it at the other end. We were then faced with a house full of boxes and bags, and not quite sure where everything was. At least we could make the bed up, put our toothbrushes in the bathroom and set the kitchen up with the kettle, coffee machine and the basics for breakfast. We are slowly getting there, but if anyone could tell me where my Birkenstocks or my lunch boxes are then do tell me!

Eating

On Tuesday evening, after we moved in, we went round the corner to meet friends at our new local pub, where I enjoyed a good plate of fish and chips which were just the thing after a busy and stressful day. We now have a great little local deli, and I popped in there on Wednesday for some bits and pieces for lunch: lemon and oregano olives, a baguette, a few slices of salami and a small piece of brie. It is lovely to have a place like this around the corner.

In town

I was back at work on Thursday, and took a walk around the city centre at lunch time, enjoying the sunshine and the city.

In the shopping basket

There was a great haul in the Wonky Box this week – lettuce, cucumber, avocados, potatoes, tomatoes, a bunch of wee carrots and a lovely bunch of watercress I used to make a sauce to have with salmon on Sunday. There was also a little pumpkin, perhaps to roast during the week. I topped up the basket with some sweetcorn to make the most of the season, some capsicum, lemons, limes, pears and a little bunch of broccolini.

Theatre

On Saturday evening, I went to see Belle – A Performance of Air. It was a fantastic hour of dance, aerial performance, music and theatrical effects all set to specially composed music. An amazing show, one can’t help but marvel at the strength and courage of the aerial artists. You can see a wee clip of it here.

Simple things

  • Hearing that a friend at work has been able to adopt her foster dog. Wonderful news.
  • Laughing with friends.
  • Having a little garden.
  • Living close to lots of local amenities from a supermarket to a fruit and veg shop to a deli to the library.
  • Attending a pōwhiri (a welcome) at Toi Whakaari, the New Zealand Drama School for the new Master’s students. Quite wonderful!
  • Getting bread, hot cross buns and croissants delivered on Saturday morning for special treats.

  1. It takes ages finding a place for everything, and then remembering where that place is, but it looks like you’ve chosen a good new home. I hope you’ll be very happy there.

  4. Well done moving so quickly. I find it hard enough to de-clutter, never mind moving. (but I guess moving makes you de-clutter properly.)

I watched the clip on Belle A performance in the air. ..lovely! I could watch it all day.

  5. Best of luck with all of the moving in tasks ahead of you. How wonderful to have that nice deli just around the corner. Is this far from your last house? Just like you I love taking walks during my lunch break. I usually eat with the children so when it is break time I don’t need to think about that. Looking forward to see more photos from your new neighbourhood. Thank you for the coffee 🙂
