Thistles and Kiwis

Well….I had planned out this post, talking about the rain today (again), the camellias and so on and then at 3pm we heard a rumbling sound. I got up to wash the dishes and there was no water. We went outside and there was a slip that had knocked out our gas and water and pushed over the fence at the top of the steps going down from the house. As we could smell gas, we called the fire brigade, who came very promptly and were just wonderful. After an hour or so, we were told we had to evacuate, and our neighbours below had to as well. We are staying tonight with friends, and not sure when we will get back into the house. At least we could see the council had arrived as we left. Goodness knows what next.

So I honestly don’t know if I will be posting on Six on Saturday again as in the worst case scenario we will have to move out of the house. In the meantime, here are some camellias I managed to capture before the slip. Thanks to Jim at Garden Ruminations, for hosting Six on Saturday, whose knowledge of all things plants and gardening makes him an ideal host and move on to what can be see at the moment outside.

  4. The picture looking down to the roof of the house below makes it all to clear what’s at stake. I hope it turns out to be nothing too serious and that you can get back in safely and soon.

  7. Oh my god ! I hope everything will go back to normal for you and yours… that you will be able to stay in the house. Good luck ; the Sixes will be waiting and keep us posted when you can

  15. This isn’t the first time you have experienced a slippage but seems to be one of the worst! Thank goodness you smelled the gas! I join the already expressed hope that your home itself is not damaged and that you will be able to return before long.

    1. No – this was quite scary as we heard a rumble and couldn’t think what it could be. I went to wash the dishes…and there was no water so we went out to look and saw the slip and smelled the gas. The fire brigade came really quickly at least but who knows when we can return.

  16. lol at first I thought you wrote ‘a ship had knocked out our gas’ – then reread the words again.
    Hope things settle down and you’re not left in limbo indefinitely.

  18. I “liked” your post because of the camellia pics, they’re beautiful, but on the other hand I really DIDN’T like to read about what’s happened.
    Fingers, toes, and everything else crossed that all is well in the end.

  20. My brother lived in Wellington for some time so I know that it is an exciting place to live for many reasons but your experience goes beyond excitement. I hope that you can get back into your house in the course of time.
