If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea on Hogmanay…we would be sitting outside, listening to the sounds of summer, the occasional thwack of a tennis racquet as it hits the ball echoing from the tennis courts over the road, the bird song, the buzzing of the bees and a few cicadas.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea, I would show off my dahlias again, and we would look at all the alstroemerias in bloom and the hostas coming into flower.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would talk about our plans for the new year, our goals and intentions, our hopes and wishes.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I say I do hope we can travel next year as it will have been four years since my last visit to Europe. You say yes, let’s hope so, but better not make any plans at the moment. I agree.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I would wish you and your family a very happy New Year and all the best for 2022.

  1. I enjoyed the last hour of light today sitting next to our swimming pool and enjoying a glass of wine with my husband. I listened to the Red-eyed Doves settling down for the night; watched the Hadeda Ibises fly into perch on the sturdy branches of the Natal fig tree; a Cattle Egret caught the sunlight as it flew overhead; Grey-headed Sparrows chirruped as they raided the last of the seeds in the feeder; I could hear the distant sound of music wafting towards us with the breeze … now it is quiet except for the chorus of frogs in the dam across the road. The year will disappear while I sleep and in the morning I will look afresh at the world around me … a happy New Year to you both!

  2. Happy new year to you and yours. I was in bed way before midnight, but figured it was after midnight in Wellington so that had to count.
