If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…the weekend coffee share edition

Thistles and Kiwis,

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…on this sunny Sunday morning, we would be sharing croissants and bread, and enjoying a lazy breakfast. There were white peaches too, sliced to nibble on the side, and blackcurrant jam should you wish.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would talk about how lucky we are to be in New Zealand at this time, how we are able to go to the cinema, shops, galleries and the theatre, but that we still monitor the cases coming into the country and noted the small number of community cases who had been in managed isolation in the same hotel. As to when we will get the vaccine, well looks like later this year.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I would tell you that on Friday night we went to see the British comedian Russell Howard, and how this was the first show like this since 2019. I say he was good but the show overran by half an hour. Still, you say, you certainly got a full evening of comedy.

If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…we would move to sit outside in the sun and look at the plants, loving the little ears on the lavender. We would talk about cooking, about recipes we had tried from Ottolenghi’s Simple, and about how I was going to make a hot smoked salmon and courgette (zucchini) tart for tomorrow, inspired by Sophie Hansen’s book. You say that looks good. I say, why don’t you come round for lunch on Monday since it is a holiday? And you say thanks – I will.

  4. What a great way to start the day! Croissants always remind me of Saturday mornings in Sydney when we were young. The bakery had two kinds of Croissants, ones made with butter and the others with margarine. NO contest! We always went for the buttery ones.

      1. We bought the original 4 in Sweden, and each time we go back to Europe we pick up more. We now have 7, but of course have no idea when we will be able to travel there again. Hopefully in 2022!

  6. Oh that croissant – or cornetto as I’d like to call them, since my experience of them is entirely Italian – looks fabulous! And the lavender looks lovely too. I’ve actually started planning the garden, 2021 edition, myself. Can’t wait!

  8. The croissants sound delicious, thanks! I’m so glad NZ is doing relatively well during the pandemic. We’re in lockdown here in the Netherlands so I was totally surprised and a little envious to read you can go to cinemas and shops and all.

  13. I find croissants so dangerous and yummy but you are quite right, we are so lucky here in NZ, lucky we can do things other countries cant do.
