So here we are, and another week of small pleasures, some of which I talked about in my last post…which was all about Wellington on a Plate experiences. Here are some other small pleasures from this week.
Lunch at Lake Ferry
Sunday was a beautiful day, so we drove over to Lake Ferry, a beach village on the shores of Lake Onoke, about an hour’s drive from Martinborough in the Wairarapa (so about one and a half hours from Wellington). The lake sits borders Palliser Bay, and you can stand and watch the waves crashing on the beach. We had lunch at the Lake Ferry Hotel, sitting outside and looking at the view below.

Martinborough
On the way home, we stopped in Martinborough to pick up some wine and locally produced olive oil. We haven’t been over here since April, but now spring is here, we will probably return a few more times in the coming months. It was lovely to see all the lambs gambolling in the fields as we drove around.

Cake
I made this poppy seed cake from this recipe by Rachel Roddy in The Guardian. I used a rich sherry instead of the madeira that I couldn’t find here, which gave it a darker colour. I should have put more caraway seeds in…but better to err on the side of caution first time around.
Thanks to Mani over at A New Life Wandering for the original idea.
