Hello and welcome to this week’s small pleasures…coming to you on Sunday, New Zealand time, instead of Monday, as I am off to Hamilton again this week. It was a week that saw my birthday, which you can read about in my last post. There was cake, presents and prosecco along the way. The main small pleasures of this week!
A whale
Work stopped in Wellington at the sight of a southern right whale in the harbour. His presence also stopped the Matariki fireworks display (which, to be frank, would not have happened due to the weather anyway). You can read more here. The whale is out in the water in the headline picture above!

Saturday afternoon tea and sofa
Detective novel, tea, and a great BBC Radio 4 serial – ideal for a wet Saturday afternoon.

New Zealand School of Dance
It was time again for the choreographic season at the New Zealand School of Dance, with works performed and created by the contemporary students. As usual, the enthusiasm and energy could not be faulted, but personally I felt all the works were too similar: there was an awful lot of aggression and no lyricism at all. Anyway, it was still good to go and I enjoyed the incorporation of the physical space of the basement theatres into the works.

Thanks to Mani over at A New Life Wandering for the original idea.
You can find Thistles and Kiwis on Facebook, and also on Instagram@thistleandkiwis. As for Twitter….am totally inactive these days. If you want to get in touch, email me on thistlesandkiwis@gmail.com
99! Amazing 🙂 I need to make time to get back into it. Very cool about the whale!

I know! Made it to 100 on Monday! The whale is now out at sea, but it was such fun having him here in the city.
