25th April is Anzac Day in New Zealand and Australia. This is the day on which these two nations remember all those who killed in war and also honours returned servicemen and women. The date itself (that is, 25th April) marks the anniversary of the landing of the Anzacs, New Zealand and Australian soldiers, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915.
In the morning we visited the Fields of Remembrance white crosses installation in the Botanic Gardens. Now in its final year, as part of the 100 year commemoration of World War 1, the field consists of 5,270 named crosses for every person from the region who died during that war. It is quite a dramatic thing to see, and certainly makes you think.
It was a gorgeous, sunny day, so we drove over to Martinborough for lunch and a trip out of the city, and saw the commemoration of the memory of local men.
