Staying by the bay in Vancouver

To round off this series of blog posts about our Vancouver trip, just a few words about where we stayed, The Sylvia Hotel.  The hotel building  is a a designated heritage building, located on English Bay.  It is  close to Stanley Park and not too far from central Vancouver. It was built in 1912 and the first cocktail bar in Vancouver opened here in 1954!  While Errol Flynn stayed here, he did not die here, despite some stories that have been told about the place.

This is not the hotel to stay in if you want all ‘mod cons’ (though there is good wifi!).  There are proper keys to open the room doors that you leave with reception, friendly staff who get to know you, a nice bar with staff that know about the drinks list, a pleasant restaurant, and lots of quirky features like keeping the old system of indicating where the lift is.

And so our holiday came to an end.  We said goodbye to Vancouver on a lovely sunny day (see headline image and last blog post), but hope to come back soon.  It is a city I fell in love with.
