Swans, snapper and a trip to Auckland part 2

My second day in Auckland began with a thunderstorm. We were woken up in the wee small hours by flashes of lightening and thunder that almost shook the house.  I have to say, it was more exciting than scary.

Anyway, the day ‘proper’ began with brunch at the Five Loaves Cafe in Devonport.  We both had Eggs Benedict, mine with smoked salmon, Tamsin’s with bacon.  The food was just right for a Sunday brunch, tasty and filling.

We headed to the beach for some nice views and a blast of fresh air.  It wasn’t the best of weather, but at least the rain held off at that point.

Smoked fish…though not so sure about the smoked salmon heads on the left

We then took a walk, heading for the viaduct, stopping for ice-cream when the rain came down.  I had a scoop of coconut and one of pineapple – sort of ice-cream pina colada.

Contemplative gull

All in all, it was a great weekend, and it all ended too quickly with an afternoon flight back to Wellington and Malaysian take-away for dinner.

  1. Your picture of the contemplative gull reminded me of a gallus gull we saw at “A room in Leith” on Sunday. I thought it was a seagull but Roger said it was a herring gull. Anyway, some people were sitting at the tables outside so that they could smoke. This brave bird swooped down and emptied a packet of crisps on the table before eating the contents!
