Sunshine, showers and monkfish

Believe it or not, I am sitting writing this sitting outside in glorious sunshine.  I say believe it or not as it is autumn, and in the north of North Island they have been having storms and severe weather warnings.  Wellington meantime is basking in sunshine – at least at the moment – though not sure for how long.

Autumn Sunday afternoon

Last Sunday, we picked up our new car.  I know nothing about cars, but I do know that this is comfortable at least!

The new car – not sure what to call it yet – suggestions welcome

All the instructions inside the car are in Japanese which, I am sure you agree, is going to be very useful!  We drove to Eastbourne and had huge plates of fish and chips at the Lifeboat Tavern http://lifeboattavern.co.nz/

This week we had an Icelandic guest for dinner, Svanhildur, a friend of my friend Elin in Copenhagen.  I cooked a very old favourite – Delia Smith’s Italian Baked Fish with monkfish for a treat as the fish.  I have to say that I have lost count of the number of times I have made this but it always works out well.

Yesterday we went to the Lighthouse Cinema to see ‘First Position’, a documentary about six young dancers preparing for the Youth America Grand Prix competition.  The film covered the diversity of the backgrounds of the young hopefuls, from a girl with an incredibly bossy and pushy mother to the young lad from Colombia, who had had to fight all the way (he ended up with a scholarship to the Royal Ballet School in London).    http://www.lighthousecuba.co.nz/

Finally, we took delivery of our emergency kit.  Let’s hope we don’t have to use it.
