A winter’s day

We’ve had some pretty awful weather this week – rain and cold southerlies.  The sort of weather where you really just want to be at home with a pot of tea, a plate of hot, buttered toast and a good book.  However, the weather the past two days has improved, with some blue skies and sun, and slightly warmer temperatures.  But it is still winter. The shortest day is upon us, and Matariki, the start of the Māori, new year, is just around the corner.

It has been too dark in the mornings to walk through the Botanic Gardens, but I was lucky enough to walk home today and get to see what is going on there. It is great to see Swiss chard growing again, to be made available to locals at the end of the season.

I also noted quite a few daffodils, which, even though it is the middle of winter, seem to be blooming.  I guess the warm autumn has given them a boost?  Anyway, lovely to see a few golden blooms.

I have been watching the ginkgo tree turn to a beautiful golden yellow over the past few weeks, and just managed to capture it today before it completely sheds its leaves.  And what did I find underneath?  More signs of daffodil life.
