I have had a couple of what I am going to call bonus days off work this week. It is really the calm before the storm, since things will soon be getting busy, so I should really be grateful for the time off. Charlie, our visiting cat, has been round a lot, and has really claimed our terrace as his space.
We both had a little surprise yesterday with the appearance of a kākā, the big, brown parrot. These parrots are forest-dwelling birds, found on all three main islands of New Zealand, and have been decreasing in numbers due to forest clearance and introduced mammal predators. However, they are a relatively common sight in parts of Wellington city, having spread from Zealandia, the wildlife sanctuary in Karori. The Botanic Gardens in fact have almost labelled them a pest since they rip the bark off the trees.
What is that?
The weather continues to be sunny which is lovely, especially since I have this little bit of time to myself. Long may it continue!

So strange think that a Kaka is a pest! Beautiful weather!

It is strange about the kaka – but just in a small area mind you! Hope you’ve also had good weather today.
