Our final (and very short) trip took us to Kawakawa, purely because I wanted to see the public toilets designed by Hundertwasser. I’ve seen some of his work in Austria, and had no idea that he moved to New Zealand and became a New Zealand citizen. Check out his stuff here if you don’t know it and of course below!

The other thing of note about Kawakawa is the little steam train that goes through the town. We didn’t take the time to ride on it, preferring to go and lie on the beach and relax.

Our short time in Auckland finished with dinner at Tanuki’s Cave, a really good Japanese restaurant. While a plate of cabbage with Japanese mayonnaise may not sound exciting, I can promise you it is really excellent! The restaurant specialises in yakitori skewers. One of my favourites was the Scotch fillet steak with butter & soy sauce, which was extremely tender. The deep fried cheese was something else! Highly recommend the place if you are in Auckland.
And so our trip came to an end with a very long drive (complete with earthquake) home. It was a really lovely few days and allowed us to see more of this beautiful country.
