Thistles and Kiwis,

What a glorious, sunny day it is today – it really feels like spring. Certainly, the garden is looking spring like, with daffodils and crocuses in flower. Everything is looking bright and cheery, after a few grey and rainy days. Anyway, thanks once again to  The Propagator for allowing us to share what is going on in our gardens. Check out the participant guide if you want to join in.

Like the past two weeks, I’m starting with daffodils. The jet fire are looking fantastic in the sunshine. They are definitely a great choice for a small daffodil to put into pots, and I highly recommend them if you are on the look out for something similar. This year I also got some miniature daffodils, in this case tête-à-tête. I’ve put a picture of them in their pot so you get some idea of their size, and also used them in the featured image at the top of the post. I just love them. Finally, last year’s jonquil of some variety looks like it will put on a good display again. I looked back to see what variety they are, but could not find the name, so if anyone has any ideas, do let me know.

Coming into flower

At number two, grape hyacinth or muscari. As well as a few left from last year, I bought some more blue and some white ones this year. So far, there have been four blue ones. I really hope for a good display in the coming weeks – fingers crossed.

There are no camellias this week for a change, but there are more pictures of the hellebores just because they are quite beautiful and graceful.

And so to the magnolia which is coming into flower as you can see. It is quite difficult to photograph, both because the flowers are high up and the angle at which you have to stand. This picture was taken by my husband who is a good deal taller than me.

Coming in at number five this week are some more crocuses. The first few to flower were all white, but since then there have been some stunning lilac coloured ones and today the first yellow one. I may have said last week that I bought a bag of 50 random bulbs, and I am very happy with what has flowered so far. Next year I might try some different ones – though where I will plant them is another matter!

And on planting more things, after looking at all the lovely dahlias over recent weeks from northern hemisphere SoSers, I have ordered dahlias that are small enough for pots. Of course, having a new tempting bulb catalogue just pushed me along to do so as well. After visiting NZ Bulbs, I went to King’s Seeds, and ordered enough to get two free packets of seeds of my choice. I think I may well have ordered far too many….

  1. There are about a dozen flowers on my Magnolia tree! must be the hot weeks we had in April and May and then weeks of rain and a bit cold – confused the seasons for it.
    Normally the flowers are in March and this year there were loads then.

  2. It’s so lovely to see your spring flowers and for us on this side of the globe it’s a great reminder of what to order. I love Jetfire and prefer the dwarf daffs as they don’t fall over in bad weather

  9. I love tête-à-tête, the white ones (Toto) are pretty gorgeous too! I was looking at my bulb containers this afternoon (in some I have not removed the bulbs from last year so who knows whether any will reappear) when I noticed leaves appearing from the pot of Scilla! Next month I shall have to plant those bulbs that I did remove from containers so it looks like a visit to the garden shop to buy more pots (and maybe a few Jetfire) and some wallflowers for the top 😁

    1. Yes I left some of my bulbs in too and it has been interesting to see what is coming up. Like you, I need yet more pots…though think I am running out of places to put them 🙂

  10. What was I thinking? I followed your Kings Seeds link (We have a different King’s Seeds) and want to buy all my veg from New Zealand. Lots of different stuff; the grass is always greener…

  13. Such lovely daffodils, in particular the last one. The central trumpet is a gorgeous colour. Our Bunnings had some amazing dahlia’s for sale last week. They were in pots, and flowering, and of course I could not help myself and bought one.

  14. I’ve just placed an order for Tête-à-tête (and many others), it’s lovely to see yours in flower right now. The colours of your hellebores are so delicate – they’re absolutely beautiful.
